"If the day ever came when we were able to accept ourselves and our children exactly as we and they are, then, I believe, we would have come very close to an ultimate understanding of what ‘good’ parenting means.”

Overview

Children are the future of a nation. For an emerging country like India, development of underprivileged children holds the key to the progress of the nation itself, and their education is the cornerstone of this progress. But education for children cannot be achieved without ensuring the welfare of the family – a child can go to school regularly only when the family, particularly the mother is healthy and empowered; the family has decent livelihood opportunities and a steady income.
Realizing this, Darakht Chhanv Foundation, beginning in the corridors of education, has adopted a lifecycle approach with intensive programmes focused on family health, livelihood and community engagement through women empowerment, which addresses the needs of less privileged children, their families and the larger community.

Education

Mission Education, the education programme of Darakht Chhanv Foundation provides basic education and healthcare to underprivileged children, with the belief that education is both the means as well as the end to a better life because it empowers an individual to earn his/her livelihood while also increasing one’s awareness on a range of issues; in the process helping him/her evolve as a better citizen.
Darakht Chhanv Foundation , educational initiatives include Pre-school [3-6 yrs], Non Formal Education [6-14 yrs non-school going], Remedial Education [6-14 yrs school going] and Bridge Course [14-18 yrs drop-outs]. It is an education NGOM which works for education for underprivileged children who are under difficult circumstances, such as child labour, children of poorest of the parents, children inflicted and affected with HIV/AIDS, street and runaway children, children with rare disabilities, disaster struck children and slum children. Special emphasis is given on girl education and women education, so that they and their families get empowered.

For which the Headmaster of the school expressed, much gratitude and also wished the organization to move forward.

Healthcare

Project “Well being”
“He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything” – Arabic proverb
India has made rapid strides in the health sector since independence. However, various eye opening data from NFHS clearly indicate that access to healthcare still remains a challenge.
While the health statistics of rural India continue to be poor, the health status and access to health for the poor in urban slum dwellers has surfaced to be equally deplorable and have less than 4% of government primary healthcare facilities.
Urban slum dwellers suffer from adverse health conditions owing to mainly two reasons –first the lack of education and thus lack of awareness; and second the unwillingness to lose a day’s wage in order to reach the nearest medical facility. Healthcare for underprivileged, which is a desperate need, thus remains unaddressed.
The need of the hour is thus a two pronged approach – first to bring quality healthcare services to doorsteps of the needy and second to promote healthcare healthcare awareness and contemporary healthcare seeking behavior among the underprivileged.

we are Providing basic needs for healthcare and nutrition: like dry rations (e.g. food such as rice, wheat, lentils, etc.), medical support (e.g. medicines, doctor consultation, etc.) to all the children and family members. In this scenario, educating the young girls with the basics of menstruation is imperative to instill confidence and empower them with knowledge, so they can comprehend the overall process of the menstrual cycle better. With your contribution, we will provide – Sanitary pad supply, 2 new undergarments, an emergency period kit, Soap bar & Disposal bags for unprivileged girls/women.

Livelihood

Project “AATMANIRBHAR”

(self-sustaining)
The youth comprises over one-third of the Indian population which in turn constitutes a major part of the labour force of the country. The number of underprivileged youth in India who lacks education and proper guidance is so huge that according to the reports of the Financial Express only 15% of the young graduates passing out of colleges are employable; the rest are branded unemployable.
It is not their lack of theoretical knowledge that causes this. Instead, it is the lack of right skills and attitude. There is thus, an increasing concern among the leading employers of the country, about the dearth of ready-to-deliver employees. In addition, the macro perspective affirms that, it is crucial for the energy of the underprivileged youth to be channelized properly with proper direction to aid economic growth and nation building to elude their addition to family woes, social stress and national misery.
“AATMNIRBHAR” is such an initiative of Darakht Chhanv Foundation which through its e-learning education programme aims at creating a pool of young and independent people, from a section of underprivileged youth, through skill enhancement in tandem with market requirements. It is an effort towards bridging the gap between demand and supply of skilled manpower in the fast emerging services and retail sectors of modern India.

Livelihood, the program identifies adolescent girls and women from the community and develops them into Change Agents, who in turn actively contribute to the community mobilization process. women and adolescent girls are being trained to be “change agents” to further serve as Community Health Educators, Health Volunteers, and Peer Educators in their communities

Women Empowerment

Project “Pride”
Various studies, as well as our experience, have shown that when we work towards women empowerment, the whole society benefits. But unfortunately in India, far from empowering women, most are denied even their basic rights like health, education of girls for women empowerment, employment and a respectable status in society. According to a recent UNDP Human Development Report, India has a dangerously imbalanced sex ratio, the chief reason being rampant female infanticide and sex-selective abortions.
“Pride” will be our upcoming project to address these challenges through a simple yet effective approach. The programme will be specifically aimed at realization of both individual and collective self-esteem and inner strength for marginalized and socially excluded women and adolescent girls through innovative community practices. This project identifies adolescent girls and women from the community and develops them into Change Agents, who in turn actively contribute to the community mobilization process.
We believe that there’s light in every human heart. Our job is to seek and find it. Bearing testimony to that, many of our supporters have come up with their own ideas to help generate awareness and funds for our cause. The world today is facing an unprecedented challenge in the form of COVID 19. Economies have fallen, mighty nations have surrendered and life as man knows it has been reduced to the confines of their homes. And while the world is battling the virus, here in our country we have another war also to win. Thousands of migrant workers and daily wagers have been left jobless in the wake of the current state of lockdown which has affected children and women the most. And while most of us are worrying about our kids’ education, our job, our future, our businesses and its prospects and how to handle time at home in isolation or simply getting bored at home. The less privileged ones have only one worry.

Where will their next meal come from?
Will their kids sleep on an empty stomach again?
Will their family survive another day of starvation?

And if hunger doesn’t get them, disease surely will. They stay in makeshift homes that open into each other. Social Distancing is an alien concept and almost impossible to follow, even if they tried. Their living conditions are deplorable as the most basic hygiene and sanitation facilities haven’t reached them yet.

India it is time now to do what you do best. It is time to your SHARE!

It is time to spread the love, extend support and help & put the needs of others before our luxuries. It is time to do our best and make sure no one sleeps hungry in the times of COVID 19.

“Education should not stop”

As the phased reopening of schools starts,
WILL THESE CHILDREN RETURN TO SCHOOL?

Forced to stay indoors with schools being shut down, children became one of the worst sufferers of the pandemic. While many children shifted to digital mode of learning, the less privileged children did not have similar access to technology and their education came to a halt.

With one year’s gap in education, over 24 million children* globally are at the risk of dropping out of school. In India, 5.3 percent of rural children aged 6-10 years have not enrolled in school this year, compared to 1.8 percent in 2018*

Through its Shiksha Na Ruke initiative, Darakht Chhanv Foundation has been making an effort to help less privileged children continue their education through a blended learning approach during the pandemic.

From creating innovative learning material at home to borrowing smart phones to study online, and attending cluster classes in the communities wearing masks, these children are stopping at nothing. Despite the odds, they have not given up on their education and their dreams. Then, how can we?

Join hands with #ShikshaNaRuke to ensure that education does not stop for any child.

“She can fly

“Giver her the sky” ”

About the Initiative

A mother, a sister, a daughter, a home-maker, a teacher, a doctor, a leader; women hold our worlds together in a million ways. A girl child comes into this world with just as many expectations, dreams and aspiration as a boy, but soon finds out that her way towards achieving them is much more challenging. The mere absence of an education and the many different set of rules that a girl has to follow according to the norms of the society makes her suffer mentally, emotionally and physically from a very young age.

Darakht Chhanv Foundation’s initiative ‘She Can Fly’ is an effort to enable, equip and empower girl children with quality education, proper nutrition, good health, adequate skills, and above all a lot of self-confidence to help them live their lives to their fullest potential.

This is also a step towards sensitizing the civil society at large and helping create a girl child/women friendly society to help her thrive.

Let us all come forward and join hands to give wings to her dreams. Empower, educate, and make her strong to stand her own ground and shine in her efforts. She Can Fly, let’s give her the sky!
